The Sheffield Olympic Legacy park delivers on the promises made in the London 2012 bid document for a sporting, community, environmental and economic legacy. As a campus for sports, health and well being, the park will not only reflect Sheffield’s sporting strengths but also, and importantly, that we are the most active city in the UK.
The park, a joint venture between Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield City Council and the private sector opened in September 2017.
Directly appointed by Olympic Legacy Park Ltd, we have worked since 2015 to develop a comprehensive new Sheffield Park. As a campus for sports, health and wellbeing, the park is a joint venture between Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield City Council and the private sector.
The masterplan for the park is ambitious and seeks to weave together the themes of elite sport, health and wellness, inward investment for the city and community whilst making the most of the sites dramatic topography and the location adjacent the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal and the proximity to The English Institute of Sport, Ice Sheffield and Sheffield Arena
The site is located only 1.5 miles from Sheffield city centre along the canal, but is not perceived as a central location by many who live in or visit the city. Consultation with Sheffield City Council, led to discussion about how this can be addressed and the development at the park is seen as a catalyst to improving strategic connectivity in the wider area. In particular the strategic Green Route Network on the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal and the local cycle network.
The park contributes to the Existing Sports and Cultural Institutions and venues already present at Don Valley. The landscape is the unifying element between existing and proposed development and the intention was to create one park that incorporates Don Valley Bowl and the former Flame Hill area.
